How to Pack a Storage Unit Like a Pro

Whether you're storing furniture during a move, clearing out space at home, or tucking away business inventory, packing your storage unit the right way makes all the difference. Start With a Plan

Before you move a single box, take inventory of what you’re storing. Think through:

• Which items will you need to access more frequently?
• What items are fragile or temperature-sensitive?
• How long do you expect to store everything?

Sketch a quick layout or “zone plan” for your unit—bulky items in the back, essentials near the front, and a path down the middle if space allows. Knowing where things go before you start stacking will save you major headaches later.

Use Uniform Boxes & Label Everything

Use sturdy, same-sized boxes whenever possible. This makes stacking easier and safer. Small and medium boxes are ideal because they’re easier to lift and won’t collapse under pressure.

Pro tips:

• Label all sides of every box with what's inside and where it came from (e.g. Kitchen – Pots & Pans).
• Use clear plastic bins for seasonal items you may need to access often.
• Avoid overstuffing boxes—it weakens the structure and increases risk of damage.

Disassemble Large Furniture & Stack Vertically

Break down bed frames, tables, and other large furniture to save space. Store headboards, bed rails, and legs vertically along the walls. Use the space up as well as out.

Don’t forget:

• Wrap furniture in blankets or plastic wrap to prevent scratches.
• Place heavy items on the bottom, lighter ones on top.
• Store mattresses upright with protective covers to prevent mold and sagging.

Create an Aisle & Leave Room to Breathe

One common mistake is packing the unit wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling—only to realize you need something in the back two weeks later. Leave a small aisle down the center if possible, or at least keep regularly used items in the front.

Also, don’t pack everything tight against the walls. Leave a few inches of space to promote air circulation—especially in non-climate-controlled units.

Protect Fragile & Sensitive Items

For breakables, use bubble wrap, foam sheets, or towels to protect delicate items. Stack dishes vertically like records, and avoid putting anything heavy on top of fragile boxes.

If you’re storing:

• Electronics: Use original boxes if available. Store off the ground and avoid extreme temps.
• Artwork or mirrors: Use mirror boxes and wrap carefully. Store standing up, not flat.
• Important documents or photos: Use waterproof containers and opt for a climate-controlled unit.

Maximize Vertical Space With Shelving

If you’re storing for the long haul or rotating inventory (like a business), consider bringing in freestanding shelving. This helps you:

• Access individual boxes without restacking
• Separate categories of items more easily
• Reduce the chance of crushed contents

Shelves are especially useful in larger units (10x15 or bigger) where floor stacking quickly becomes inefficient.

Keep a Storage Unit Inventory Sheet

Don’t rely on memory. Keep a running inventory of what you’ve stored, either written on paper or saved digitally. Some people even tape a printed copy inside the unit or just inside the door for reference. Apps like Google Sheets or Trello can help you track what’s where, and which boxes contain what, especially for longer-term storage or shared family units.

Use Covers, Not Plastic Bags

It’s tempting to throw clothes, bedding, or cushions in trash bags, but plastic traps moisture, which can lead to mold and mildew. Instead, use:

• Fabric furniture covers
• Cotton sheets or drop cloths for dust protection
• Breathable bins for clothes or linens

This helps protect your belongings while allowing airflow in both climate and non-climate-controlled units.
